Time Out Tuck to Teach Kids how to Share

Cobra's time-out tuck that will show your kids just how easy (and yummy) it is to share. Ah, the holidays, a time for temper tantrums, time outs, hangry outbursts, and a lesson or two in learning to share. An important skill for children to learn during both play and socialisation, learning to share shows children how to negotiate, make compromises, and practice patience in between taking turns. What’s more, the connection between food and hangry temper tantrums is a real one and while there are a number of other reasons why your children might be taking a monumental moment to express their emotions, often emotional outbursts can simply be put down to kids needing a quick snack to sustain their sugar levels and help prevent unpleasant and exhausting hangry holiday tantrums.

This soft frozen fruit ice lolly recipe is the ideal way to demonstrate these qualities and is especially effective for children just learning or mastering the art of sharing. What’s more, with very little added sugar, loaded with goodness and perfect for hot summer holidays, these lollies double back as a fun and fruity boost to cool off hangry tempers.

You will need:
  • Ice lolly moulds
  • 2 ripe mangoes
  • 2 ripe bananas
  • 120ml coconut milk
  • 100g granola
  • 100g dark chocolate
  • Baking sheet
  • Wax paper
Grab the kids and let’s get cooking! 
  1. Using a rounded edge butter knife get the little ones to roughly cut up the ripe banana while an adult cut the ripe mangoes off their pits. Once the mango is easier to handle, get the kids to chop up the sweet and juicy mango too.
  2. Add the chopped banana and mango into a bowl or blender and add 120ml of coconut milk.
  3. Blitz or blend up the banana, mango, and coconut milk mix to create a smooth and pasty puree.
  4. Have the kids scoop the puree mix into the frozen fruit ice lolly moulds and gently tap the moulds to eliminate any air bubbles before freezing.
  5. Place the ice-lolly moulds in the freezer and allow to set for 8 to 12 hours.
  6. Once your icy fruit lollies are fully frozen grab the kids to complete their lesson in sharing before tucking into this tasty treat. Get one child to measure out 100g of granola and another child to place the granola into a blitzing bowl or blender.
  7. Next, you guessed it, blitz up the granola to refine the mix and remove any large, dried lumps. An alternative to this and another way to get the kids to burn off pent up energy, get the kids to crush the granola in a Ziplock bag using a wooden rolling pin or soft rubber or plastic mallet.
  8. Next get the kids to break up 100g of dark chocolate into a double boiler. If you don’t have a double boiler you can also use a glass or metal bowl suspended above a pot of boiling water making sure the chocolate bowl does not touch the boiling water. Bring the water to the boil after the children have broken up the chocolate keeping them safe from the hot water and surfaces.
  9. Slowly melt the chocolate until smooth.
  10. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper that will fit back into the freezer.
  11. Next, carefully remove the lollies from their setting moulds. If this is difficult, briefly run the moulds under hot water to loosen.
  12. As a final step in preparing these tasty time out treats, next, dip the tops of the frozen fruit ice lolly into the melted chocolate, being careful not to burn, and then into the crushed granola. Place the chocolate and granola coated frozen fruit lollies onto the baking tray lined in wax paper and allow the chocolate to set in the freezer for a few minutes.
