How fitting an Aerator to a Tap Helps to Save Water

Also referred to as a flow regulator, a tap aerator is a piece of plumbing technology that is either pre-installed as a water-saving feature included in a tap unit or is later fitted to the inside of a compatible tap spout. By regulating the volume of water that runs through the tap spout without adversely affecting the water pressure, tap aerators essentially split a single flow of water into a "shower" or spray of water by injecting air (hence the name aerator) into the flow. Furthermore, the division of the water into multiple parts or streams maintains the same sense of pressure whilst using less water. In some instances, this plumbing technology can reduce the average consumption of 15 litres of water per minute to 6 litres of water per minute.  Not only can tap aerators save you money on your water bill, but you will also save on your electricity bill as less water will be drawn from the geyser when hot water is required.

Flow Restrictors and How These Reduce Water Usage

By helping to reduce water usage by up to 60%, flow restrictors work as an alternative option to tap aerators where aerators are not compatible or suitable for a specific fitting. This plumbing technology reduces the flow rate of water, that is, the amount of water expelled per minute, to one desired by the user (the associated flow rate should be indicated on the product packaging). Most of these fittings are also equipped with water pressure compensators so that the user does not notice a loss of water pressure. Much in the same way as aerators, the use of flow restrictors can result in a significant reduction in energy consumption. 

Dual Flush Toilet Mechanisms

Toilets fitted with a dual flush activation mechanism can dispense either a lower or higher volume of water per flush, depending on the user requirement. While these toilets may not save on energy consumption, it is estimated that a dual flush toilet mechanism helps to save about 67% of the water used for toilet flushing. 

How can a Heat Pump help Save on Energy?

A heat pump, used for heating water, typically uses one-third of the electrical power used by a traditional electric hot water cylinder (or geyser), whilst achieving the same heat output. By compressing the ambient energy in the air and transferring this energy to conductive pipes which circulate the heated water back into a storage vessel, energy consumed is only used to drive a small compressor and a small circulating pump.
